The Fish and Wildlife Service, within the Department of the Interior has announced funding in the amount of $1,900,000 to support the Great Apes Conservation Fund FY13.

The Great Ape Conservation Fund is soliciting project proposals for the conservation of apes [gorillas (Gorilla gorilla); chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes); bonobos (Pan paniscus); orangutans (Pongo spp.); and gibbons (family Hylobatidae)] throughout their ranges.

The Great Ape Conservation Act of 2000 provides for the conservation and protection of apes by supporting conservation programs of countries within the range of apes, and the projects of persons with demonstrated expertise in the conservation of apes.

The research will include:

1) literature review of life history and distribution information
2) subsequent field surveys of under-studied species with poorly delineated ranges
3) identification of near- and long-term threats
4) identification of additional data needs
5) suggested conservation actions

The objectives of the project are to achieve the following:

(1) improve flow control capabilities through the structure for the SJRRP?s Interim and Restoration Flows,

(2) improve and increase precision of the operation of the dam with Interim and Restoration Flows,

(3) increase the measure of safety to pass flows through the dam for Interim and Restoration Flows, and

(4) decrease the amount of manual operations at the dam necessary to pass the Interim and Restoration Flows.

Attwater’s Prairie Chicken

The Fish and Wildlife Service, within the Department of the Interior has announced funding in the amount of $1,095,000 to support the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Breeding Facility.

The Attwater’s prairie chicken (APC) is a critically endangered grouse found in the coastal prairie of Texas. Currently, fewer than 50 birds exist at three locations.

In an effort to attain the goals established in the APC Recovery Plan (2010), captive breeding needs to be increased to provide more birds for release.
