NOI - Crystallization kinetics and surface patterns

Notice of Intent to Award - University of Colorado at BoulderThis research will focus on the fundamental science and understanding of crystallization as it pertains to salts found in waters being treated mainly via reverse osmosis.

Due to the complexity of crystallization from the concentrate

produced in water treatment applications, it has been difficult to quantify how a change in technology or process can affect the overall rate of a salt crystallizing and causing a problem in the treatment system that in turn increases the cost of operation and maintenance. The results of this research will have the ability to provide a foundation for translating this knowledge to processes such as pellet softening that could aid in the improvement of existing technologies as well as spur innovation for new technologies in water treatment.
