CDC's Collaboration with Academia to Strengthen Public Health Workforce Capacity

The purpose of this NOFO is to enhance educational and training programs around immunizations.

To implement, promote, assess and revise immunization educational programs based on recommendations by experts in immunization and training education resources to be able to efficiently and effectively

credit:


create reliable training materials and resources for health professionals.

Collaborate with partners to build the capacity of immunization providers by providing educational programs that offer continuing education credit to meet licensing or credentialing requirements.

Healthcare providers will be able to efficiently and effectively handle, store and administer vaccines while addressing growing patient concerns.

Strategic Direction and Activities I:Medical Assistants Resources and Training on Immunization (MARTi) MARTi is an external website containing a directory of training programs and resources specifically developed for the education and reading level of medical assistants.

MARTi was developed to provide a collection of immunization training, education, and resource materials for medical assistants and those responsible for their training, such as office managers or supervisors.

Through MARTi, medical assistants can discover and access multiple educational modules along with other materials housed online.

MARTi training includes:
Vaccine Administration, Vaccines for Specific Diseases, Patient Education, Record Keeping, Vaccine Safety, Immunization Schedules, and Storage and Handling.

The activities will include:
Manage and update the website and resources as new vaccine recommendations and best practices are available Create monthly newsletters and Social Media announcement Develop responsive design site for mobile device use Create an advisory committee to advance use of the website, recommend future improvements to advance the reach to medical assistants with training materials and information they need to administer vaccines safely and effectively.

Committee will convene via conference call (3 or 4 times a year).

The advisory committee would consist of key groups including American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and Professional Association of Healthcare Organization Management (PACHOM) plus others listed on the “Resource” screen on the MARTi CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

Such involvement implicates the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) Conduct webinars on immunization topics to be housed on MARTi Develop marketing template to track trends and success and to better report how materials are being used and by whom as well as refocusing on universities using MARTi as a teaching tools Strategic Direction and Activities II:
Teaching Immunization Practices (TIP) for Nurses The activities will include:
Create an advisory committee to assess the best methods/learning technology to use in the development of immunization training materials for future nurses in BSN programs.

The new advisory committee will make recommendations about content and determine the best methods and technology to use in delivery of the materials.

AACN is a key partner.

Invite NIP-It developers also.

Identify and update content as needed.

Strategic Direction and Activities II:
Immunization Resources for Undergraduate Nursing (IRUN) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) seeks to improve the integration of immunization in undergraduate nursing Create an advisory committee to assess the best methods/learning technology to use in the development of immunization training materials for future nurses in BSN programs.

The new advisory committee will make recommendations about content and determine the best methods and technology to use in delivery of the materials.

AACN is a key partner.

Invite NIP-It developers also.

CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

Such involvement implicates the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).

Identify and update content as needed.

Design website to distribute teaching resources (caste studies, PowerPoint slide decks) Publish framework – potentially as a journal supplemental The activities include:
Implement framework for immunization education in undergraduate nursing Development of a resource repository Development of teaching resources using new teaching modalities (e.g., flipped classroom communications, scripted scenarios, podcasts, webinars) Convene the advisory committee to review the framework and case studies as well as potential additional resources necessary to support the framework and development of curriculum for undergraduate nursing.

CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

Such involvement implicates the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).

Develop plan for website Strategic Direction and Activities III Environmental Scan of Immunization in Medical Education Project Teaching Immunization for Medical Education (TIME) is a curriculum designed for use in medical schools to support immunization instruction.

The materials provide student objectives, learning objectives, key teaching points, and resources.

The TIME modules provide ready-to-use instructional materials that can be integrated into existing medical curricula.

The modules include vaccine indications and contraindications, immunization schedules, and recommendations on efficient ways to increase vaccination levels.

The case-based modules were developed 20 years ago designed to encourage active, small-group learning, use modest amounts of faculty and learner time and are objective-drive A collaboration with the National Center Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) to announce the Request for Applications to assess effective teaching methods including current and effective technologies used at US medical schools with the goal of improving the TIME modules and advancing immunization teaching of future physicians.

This NOFO supplemental seeks to implement, promote, assess and revise immunization educational programs based on recommendations by experts in immunization and training education resources to create reliable training materials and resources for health professionals.

CDC will partner to build the capacity of immunization providers by providing educational programs that offer continuing education credit to meet licensing or credentialing requirements.

Health care professionals will be able to efficiently and effectively handle, store and administer vaccines while addressing growing patient concerns.

To meet the goals the following are necessary criteria for the awardee: National organization with interprofessional membership, specifically, physicians, nurses, public health and other allied health professionals.

At least 5 years of expertise in the design, delivery and evaluation of training, education and resource materials for health care personnel who deliver immunization services.

Demonstrated expertise in the development and evaluation of Multi-Clinical Teaching Scenarios (MCTS) modules.

Specifically immunization and vaccine-preventable diseases content implemented in medical education and residency programs.

Demonstrated expertise in audience specific website design, management, evaluation, and distribution of information through newsletters and social media.

Specifically immunization and vaccine-preventable disease content for medical assistants and other allied health professionals.

Demonstrated expertise in development of immunization curriculum framework and related teaching resources for baccalaureate level nursing students and other allied health professionals.

Established partnership with American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Professional Association of Healthcare Organization Management (PAHCOM), American Nurses Association (ANA), National League for Nursing (NLN), National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), and academic institutions including community and junior colleges and technical programs.
