Future Interstate Study

Section 6021 of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) legislation requires the Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT) to enter into an agreement with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to conduct the Future Interstate

The scope of this study includes actions needed to upgrade and restore the Interstate System as a premier system that meets the growing and shifting demands of the 21st Century.

This study shall contain specific recommendations regarding the features, standards, capacity needs, application of technologies, and intergovernmental roles to upgrade the Interstate System, including any revisions to law and regulations as appropriate.
