Piping Plover Management - APIS

This cooperative agreement is with Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

The objective of this Agreement is to establish roles, responsibilities, funding mechanisms, and procedures through which the National Park Service (NPS) and the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe

of Chippewa Indians will jointly participate in protecting piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) on Long Island at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and adjacent Bad River Tribal lands.

Objectives include:
(1) continuing this partnership, (2) promoting successful piping plover nesting through bird and nest protection, and (3) providing public education to park visitors.

The project engages recipients, partners, communities, and/or visitors in shared environmental stewardship; the project provides opportunities for youth to learn about the environment by spending time working on projects in National Parks; and the project motivates its youth participants to become involved in natural resources protection.

This project is to continue cooperative efforts aimed at managing and protecting nesting piping plovers on Long Island in the park that overlap with tribal lands.
