Can 'Venture Philanthropy' Help Solve Social Issues?

Deirdre Mortell, CEO of the Social Innovation Fund, explains why she feels her 'innovation-first' philanthropy philosophy is the way to combat social issues.

In this article, Mortell shared her experiences in the nonprofit and "venture philanthropy" sector initiating and encouraging philanthropy during Ireland's time of recession. Mortell then came on board to lead the Social Innovation Fund in 2014.

Mortell was at the helm of many fund projects, focusing on women's economic mobility and supporting transgender women in searching for and keeping employment.

One of Mortell's primary goals is to stimulate the economy and encourage employment. According to Mortell, she believes that to create jobs and create growth in the economy, supporting innovation is needed.
