National Sheriffs Institute

New sheriffs come to the office or are elected to the office in a variety of ways.

Some succeed a retiring sheriff.

Others come from outside the agency with different ideas for changes in the current methods of operation that appeal to their community.

Few of these new sheriffs have

experience as a chief executive officer (CEO).

Even fewer have experience with the full responsibilities of operating a local correctional facility.

The awardee of this cooperative agreement will be working closely with the National Institute of Corrections to continue offering the only courses of instruction specifically developed to enhance the skills for these elected officials to better serve their communities.
