Deputy Director’s Leadership Guide and Orientation Curriculum
The position of a Deputy Director continues to be difficult and is compounded responding to the rise of mass incarceration, an aging prison population, coupled with the intricate operational issues that face the nation’s prisons, jails and community corrections facilities.
Additionally,
they are responsible for managing these facilities in a manner that ensures public safety, the safety of staff and inmates, and accountability with taxpayer dollars.
Many are tasked leading workplaces whose missions have changed dramatically, and now include dealing with reduced budgets, limited resources, aging infrastructures, specialized populations, significant healthcare and mental health issues, overcrowding, understaffing, problems with recruitment and retention, and effectively meeting the needs of both internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
NIC invites applications from nonprofit organizations (including faith-based, community, and tribal organizations), for-profit organizations (including tribal for-profit organizations), and institutions of higher education (including tribal institutions of higher education).
Recipients, including for-profit organizations, must agree to waive any profit or fee for services.
NIC welcomes applications that involve two or more entities; however, one eligible entity must be the applicant and the others must be proposed as sub-recipients.
The applicant must be the entity with primary responsibility for administering the funding and managing the entire program.
