State Physical Activity and Nutrition Program

CDC announces the availability of fiscal year 2018 funds to implement CDC-RFA-DP18-1807:
State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Program.

Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity affect overall health and are significant risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases.

Obesity

credit:

affects 7 8. 6 million (35%) American adults and 1 2. 7 million (17%) American children, and costs our nation approximately $147 billion in annual health care expenditures.

The burden of obesity and other chronic diseases negatively affects our nation’s businesses, economy, and military readiness.

The NOFO will fund up to 15 state health departments and/or District of Columbia to work with state and local partners that support communities to improve nutrition and to support safe and accessible physical activity.

This five-year program provides state health departments the support and flexibility to work on systems at the state and local levels to implement evidence-based strategies and to leverage resources from multiple stakeholders and sectors (e.g., agriculture, transportation, education, business, commerce, housing) to improve the nutrition and physical activity status of Americans.
