The objectives of this Funding Opportunity Announcement are aligned with Executive Order 14008 (dated January 27, 2021), entitled “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad,” which states that “such work should include efforts to turn properties idled in these communities, such
as brownfields, into new hubs for the growth of our economy.
Federal agencies should therefore coordinate investments and other efforts to assist coal, oil and gas, and power plant communities…” Coal is a domestic resource that has contributed to U. S. economic growth for over a century.
However, in a shifting energy generation paradigm, innovation is needed to extract the full economic value from coal-derived materials, including coal of any rank, coal-blends, coal-wastes, coal-derived solids, coal-derived liquids, or any combination thereof.
The Advanced Coal Processing program delivers solutions to this challenge with novel technologies for producing valuable products from coal-derived sources.
Laboratory and pilot-scale research and development (R&D) within the program will develop future uses for coal outside of traditional thermal and metallurgical markets.
The program focuses on developing a spectrum of coal- derived products, ranging from high-value to high-volume.
