The Educational Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program

The 102nd Congress recognized that the USGS and the State Geological Surveys needed a coordinated program to prioritize the geologic mapping requirements of the Nation, and to increase production of these geologic maps.

The National Geologic Mapping Act (Public Law 102-285) was signed into law

credit:

in 1992 and created the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP).

The Act has been re-authorized three times since then, most recently by the 111th Congress in 2009 (Public Law 111-11, sec.

11001).

The Act recognizes that geologic maps are the primary database for virtually all applied and basic earth-science investigations.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
EDMAP is restricted to U. S. Universities with geoscience or related departments or programs (for more information on whether your institution is eligible to submit an EDMAP proposal, contact the EDMAP Program Officer).

University professors (including adjunct professors) must write and submit the proposals; the supported student(s) must not write the proposal.

EDMAP Cooperative Agreements are intended to fund upper level (junior and senior) undergraduate and graduate (Masters and Doctoral) students.

Undergraduate students must have received appropriate geoscience or related training prior to the time they are to begin the proposed project.

While it is proper for the Principal Investigator to ask for some logistical financial support so that they may mentor their student(s) in the field for a credible amount of time, the bulk of the award is intended to support the student’s proposed efforts.

EDMAP cooperative agreements do not support faculty/Principal Investigator salaries, nor do they support student tuition.
