Education Programs and Teacher Workshops with Riverway Area Schools- SACN

The St.

Croix National Scenic Riverway (SACN) and its Friends Group, the St.

Croix River Association (SCRA), will collaborate to provide teacher training and educational programming for school districts in communities neighboring the Riverway.

This project will expand the use of

SACN as a place of learning and increase the amount of programming provided to local students.

This project specifically targets fourth graders and is in alignment with the “Every Kid in a Park” and the National Park Service Centennial Act.

In the 2020-2021 school year, 30 teachers and 6,000 students will be engaged in the communities immediately surrounding the park headquarters and remote office stations.

The public purpose is entirely based upon the park and its partner engaging K-12 students and their teachers immediately along the park's corridor.

Further, the park continuing this successful program means further relevancy and inclusion will occur with the youth, and deeper relationships with the school systems will occur.

SCRA will provide three one-day training sessions or an equivalent alternative for teachers in school districts adjacent to the Riverway.

The focus of these sessions will be introduction and orientation to the Riverway as a place of learning for K-12 students.

A river-related experience (paddling or hiking) will be combined with presentations from NPS staff and other subject matter experts.

SCRA will also coordinate "Rivers are Alive" programming for fourth graders in school districts along the Riverway.

"Rivers are Alive" is the standard curriculum-based program offered at the Riverway.

This cooperative agreement also provides for logistical support to schools (transportation costs, etc).
