Racism Creates Uneven Playing Field for Nonprofits

A lead story for The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "Leaders of Color Speak Out... about being underestimated, breaking barriers, and whether things are getting better" gathers 25 leaders of color at various nonprofits and foundations.

The author, Nicole Wallace, interviewed the 25 leaders, and noted how the leaders described "feeling isolated, navigating difficult, racially fraught power dynamics...and enduring affronts to their dignity."

In the article, leaders shared experiences of feeling left out and out of place at gatherings of nonprofit executives. Often people of color are unrepresented in positions of leadership, according to one leader who is predominantly African American.

Kelly Otte for Notes on Nonprofits expressed how racism creates an uneven playing field for nonprofit leaders of color raising money. She wrote how every new generation raises the bar and as more people of color come into leadership positions things will continue to change.
