Funding for Older Americans Act Title VI Native American Programs

The purpose of Title VI of the OAAis to promote the delivery of nutrition, supportive and caregiver services to AmericanIndians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians that are comparable to servicesprovided under Title III of the OAA.

The goal of these programs is to supportthe independence and

well-being of tribal elders and caregivers living in theircommunities with nutrition, supportive and caregiver services consistent withlocally-determined needs.

Title VI Parts A/B authorizegrants to Indian tribal, public, or non-profit organizations representingfederally recognized Tribes, Alaskan Villages, and Native Hawaiians to providenutrition and supportive services.

Required nutrition services includecongregate meals and home-delivered meals.

Other nutrition-related servicescould include nutrition counseling, nutrition education, sponsorship of farmer’smarket programs, or distribution centers for food banks and charitableorganizations.

Required supportiveservices include information and assistance, but these funds could also providetransportation, chore services, and many other services that contribute to thewell-being of elders.

Title VI Part C authorizes grants to Indiantribal, public, or non-profit organizations representing federally recognizedTribes, Alaskan Villages, and Native Hawaiians to provide caregiver supportservices.

The program helps tribes provide locally-determined systems ofsupport services for family caregivers.
