The Fort Stanton and Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area (NCA) was established by Congress under Title II of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 200 9. The NCA is currently managed by the BLM Roswell Field Office (RFO).

landscape, and is located approximately 20 miles northeast of the current boundaries of the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation.

The region has had a strong Native American presence that extends into present day.

During tribal consultation meetings, the request was made for BLM to provide them the opportunity to survey the NCA in an effort to identify Traditional Cultural Properties (TCP) and Sacred Sites, so BLM can develop appropriate management.
