School Workers Federal Credit Union was established in 1941 to serve the credit needs of African Americans employed by the Charlotte, North Carolina school system. Currently, it is the largest minority controlled credit union in the state of North Carolina, with 4,200 members in Charlotte and surrounding Mecklenberg County.

FA (2009) - $2,000,000

School Workers Federal Credit Union, now called the First Legacy Community Credit Union, was chartered in 1941 with the mission to serve employees of Charlotte’s school system and their families who had few options for financial services under segregation. School Workers FCU/First Legacy CCU serves low income African Americans with affordable consumer savings, credit and debit cards, auto loans and limited mortgage loans within a ten county area of the Western Piedmont region of North Carolina. It will use its FY 2009 Financial Assistance award to support loan loss reserves and branch expansion.



TA (2004) - $57,866

School Workers Federal Credit Union will use the award to help implement technology enhancements to its existing product line to provide broad access to the credit union by members. The debit cards and other technology improvement will position School Workers to be competitive with other financial institutions in the area.

CORE (1999) - $1,550,000

School Workers FCU will use its $1,550,000 CDFI Fund award ($1,500,000 capital grant, $50,000 technical assistance grant) to enhance its liquidity and assist in capitalizing its new mortgage loan product.

The infusion of investment from the CDFI Fund, a $150,000 grant, will be leveraged many times over through increasing share growth. Increased strength in the institution"s net worth will enhance the credit union"s ability to launch new products and services and explore ways to enhance its field of membership.
